INTEGRAL MEMBER AGENCY

S.E.L. France - 'Here, There, Together'...

Integral member S.E.L. France (SEFR) supports development work mainly in French speaking African countries. They have just finished reorganising their projects into five key areas - Water & Hygiene, Nutrition, Health, Micro Credit, & Agriculture...

“Our fundraising strategy for Projects is now aimed at finding regular donors to commit to one of these areas of need,” says Patrick Guiborat CEO of SEFR. “Rather than supporting a specific project, or a more general fund, we will try & raise money for a special fund dedicated to one of these five areas.”

This new approach means that SEFR hopes to be able to support more of their local partners' projects. “I hope that people will not only give to us because we are a trusted organisation, but also that through us people will become aware of particular areas of need & be willing to meet that need by directly supporting the work of our local partners,” says Patrick.

The new graphic for SEFR's Projects Development Department is a sun and tree, & the accompanying slogan - 'Ici, là-bas, ensemble', means - 'Here, there, together'.

Rehabilitation in Northern Kenya

After years of scarce rainfall, N. Kenya experienced an acute drought from 2004-2006. Tearfund UK (TFUK) & tear Netherlands (TENL) are working together to support ongoing rehabilitation work in N.E. Kenya through their local partner, the Christian Community Services of Mount Kenya East (CCSMKE)...

"The nomadic tribes of the region lost over 70% of their livestock during the drought, becoming entirely dependent on relief food," says Phillip James of TFUK. "Today, communities are still suffering from a chronic lack of water & food, a situation which is sadly also contributing towards vicious inter-tribal fighting."

CCSMKE is the regional relief & development arm of the Anglican Church of Kenya. TFUK & TENL are currently supporting their rehabilitation project operating in the Marsabit & Kaisut desert areas. The work has been so effective that CCSMKE plan to further extend their activities throughout 2007.

"CCSMKE have mobilised local communities to de-silt & deepen five water pans which are designed to collect surface run-off water," says Phillip. "They have increased food security through providing oxen for ploughing & seeds for maize. Such activities are not only helping those suffering from the drought to rebuild their livelihoods, but are also helping to reduce the impact of future droughts."

Measuring Spiritual Impact

What is the relationship between spirituality & development? How might the ‘spiritual impact’ of our work be defined? These are some of the questions being asked in the on-going conversation between Dr. Elizabeth Olson, an academic based at the University of Edinburgh, & Fiona Wilson, Integral's International Co-ordinator...

“I was extremely encouraged by last year’s Measuring Spiritual Impact workshop at the Micah Network Consultation in Thailand," says Fiona. "We had grassroots practioners from many southern countries, academics, & northern development workers all interested in discussing spiritual impact."

An initial assessment regarding what spiritual impact measurements already exist has been completed by Dr. Olson. An email list, made up of academics & development workers from all over the world, is currently being set up. "We will work as a group on defining what we mean by ‘spiritual impact’, & look at what measurement models already exist. We will then look to facilitate a workshop in the UK, & then, God willing, an international workshop in 2008 in Thailand, before the WEA General Assembly," says Fiona.

The long-term aim of this project is to work out an agreed model of measuring spiritual impact that can be tested by practitioners. "This is an area of increasing interest in both development & academic circles, as funding bodies are increasingly recognising the role of religion in transforming socities. We are now inviting others to join the conversation through a more inclusive 'virtual' dialogue," says Fiona.

Visiting Integral Members in Scandinavia

Last month Sarah Fordham, Integral’s Communication Officer, visited Integral members Lakamissionen (LMSW), in Sweden, & the Stromme Foundation (SFNO), in Norway...

"It was such a privilege to visit Integral's Scandinavian agencies, talk to many staff members & see first-hand the tremendous dedication they have to their work," says Sarah. "Each has a real strength in the area of Communications - both technically & in telling stories. It was very inspiring to see how they do it!"

The main purpose of Sarah's trip was to gain an insight into SFNO's & LMSW's Marketing Departments, as well as communicate the added value of Integral in the area of Marketing & Fundraising. "In SFNO I was able to use our new Branding & Style guide to represent Integral through the area of Communications, & LMSW very kindly allowed me time at their staff meeting to talk about what I do, & then take devotions."

As a result of Sarah being able to demonstrate Integral's newsletter software & database, & photo library, 82 new subscribers have been gained! "Understanding more about how SFNO & LMSW run was great learning, & teaching them about the newsletter possibilities & photo library meant some great mutual learning – my expectations for the visit were far exceeded!" says Sarah.
